But as Burns basks in the ensuing scandal and Alice's instant celebrity, bad-boy anchor Reese (Jason Gedrick) incites a mad bomber who plans to blow WNS---and their ratings---to kingdom come. Maggie: Wendy Crewson. Ted: Peter Riegert.

Susan Stewart's Hits and Misses
The Beast (Rating TV 12 SV)

This new summer series boasts a fine cast, headed by Frank Langella and Jason Gedrick, as well as a heady concept: a news network whose cameras cover its office drama on the Net and world events on TV. Everybody's on the air, all the time. In the pilot, the network broadcasts a grisly death in the electric chair. Maybe that's why Beast, originally slated for mid-season, was held until now: It's too provocative for its own good. The sound bites come at bullet speed ("Celebrity is a gang rape," "The camera is God") and the issues are so tangled, nothing feels right. This Beast is powerful but too prickly for prime time. My score: 4
